Isolation and identification of a capsular serotype-A Pasteurella multocida that caused suppuration in Macropus rufus

Abstract: To find out the etiological cause of pyogenic infection of two Macropus rufus, three samples from the pus of the infected sites were collected and subject to microbiological examinations. A strain of gram-negative bacteria was isolated. Based on the results of the morphological and biochemical tests, multiple genes sequence analysis and ERIC-PCR fingerprints,the isolate was identified as a capsular serotype-A Pasteurella multocida and was then named as PM-1.PM-1 was lethal to mice with an median lethal dose (LD50) at 1.99×102 cfu/mice. It was found to be sensitive to levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin.Treatment with levofloxacin hydrochloride ointment therefore cured the infected sites in the animals and the spread of the disease was then under the control.
