Abstract: Mogera insularis (Mammalia: Eulipotyphla: Talpidae) was previously considered to be limited to Taiwan and Hainan, China. In this study, we collected three mole specimens in Anhui Province. We integrated molecular and morphometric approaches to assess the identity of these specimens. Our results indicate that one specimen from Huangshan is M. latouchei while the other two from Xuancheng and Dabie Mountains, Anqing are M. insularis. The maximum likelihood (ML) tree based on the complete Cytochrome b (Cyt b) gene showed that the M. insularis specimens from Anhui and Taiwan form a monophyletic clade with strong support (support value = 98. 1%), and the genetic distance between them was 1. 87%. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis showed that the M. insularis from Taiwan and Hainan are non-monophyletic, suggesting M. i. hainana might be a distinct species. This study provides the first record of M. insularis in the mainland of China, which greatly expanded the distribution of this species.
